M is for Mardi Gras Masks

On February 21, 2012, many cities throughout the United States and elsewhere around the world will celebrate Mardi Gras. Literally translated as “Fat Tuesday,” it is a time of celebration, parades and food before the religious fasting season of Lent. 

Introduce the holiday to your students and make your own Mardi Gras masks to honor the day.

Buy pre-made blank masks at a craft or party supply store. Using the traditional Mardi Gras colors of gold, green and purple, attach feathers, pom poms, craft jewels, sequins and glitter to the masks. Each student can also make a Mardi Gras parade “float,” using a shoebox and decorating it in the same way. Have a parade, even gently throwing beads and other trinkets to observers.
